      If you have trouble playing any of the videos I have a few suggestions for playback software. The first is "Media Player Classic - Homecinema" (http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/). This is currently (2010) hands down the best video player for Windows. It includes a huge number of audio/video codecs using ffmpeg. It also includes video card acceleration using DXVA if your system provides it.

      The second is "vlc" (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/) by the VideoLAN project. While it is not quite as clean as MPC-HC, it is cross-platform and available on Windows, Mac, Syllable, Solaris, several BSD and most Linux distros. It also uses ffmpeg for it's a/v codecs and is currently developing cross-platform acceleration.

      Video Containers:
      Files contain video and audio. A given container can use different encodings for both audio and video. In the case of mp4 and m4v, there are at least two different codecs (h.263 and h.264).
      avi, asf, wmv, mov, ogg, mkv, mp4, m4v
      Other files contain very specific video types.
      mpg, m1v, VOB, m2v

      Codec definitions:
      The fact that different standards groups will refer to the same encoding format using different names is very frustrating. This list equates the Motion Picture Expert Group (MPEG), ISO-IEC, ITU-T, and marketing names to the best of my ability.
      mpeg1 = h.261
      mpeg2 = DVD = h.262
      mpeg4-part2 = DivX = XviD = h.263
      mpeg4-part10 = AVC = ISO 14496-10 = h.264

      Disclamer 1: just because an opening is posted here doesn't mean I like the show. Some are here because they are excellent shows (Dual, Toradora, Azumanga) others were terrible shows, but the music got stuck in my head (Super Gals, Asura Cryin, Kiddy Grade). Just warning you.
