Spirited Away is a story of Chihiro, a young girl whose family is moving to a new home. Her father takes a wrong turn and wonders into the spirit world by mistake. When she suddenly finds herself alone in this world, it is only her courage and determination that carries her through.
I don't recommend reading any more until you've seen the movie. It's far better to watch having no idea what's coming. You'll never know that to expect next.
You're still reading.
Chihiro is a lazy, bratty, unattractive girl, rather typical of her generation as per Miyazaki. Her growth through this movie is what gives this movie any grasp with reality. She is hardworking, kind, and diligent in her duties. In this way she earns the respect of all her coworkers. When her friend is seriously injured, she proves herself willing to sacrifice all to save him.
The artwork is both breathtaking, and not of this world. Since Garret is famous for great quotes, I'll repeat him in saying "apparently, you don't need reality to have great artwork." So much of the work seems so real, yet cannot be real at all. The bathhouse, the train, none of this can exist, yet it fits so perfectly into the world. This is truly a masterpiece.
